Last Sunday, Alpha Hubby and I were sitting at the kitchen counter on our 18th year anniversary. We were talking and listening to old country music on DirecTv (he’s a country music fan).  I recognized some songs because I used to waitress in a place that had one of the last juke boxes and people played it all the time. Otherwise I’m not much of a country music fan.

Or here, the link to the You Tube video – http://youtu.be/yWGDeBFLsf8 – right click, open in a separate window.

When this song came on, You’re My Best Friend, by Don Williams, I recognized it and said, “Oh, I remember this song.  I liked it.”

Alpha Hubby looked at me and said, “Well, you are my best friend.  And you know you gave me a reason to go on. You do the things he talks about in this song.  Come to think of it, women – wives – are a lot like God.”

I looked at him in shock because I had no idea where he was going with that statement and wondered if we were getting ready to be hit by lightening bolts from heaven.

He went on, “Think about it.  You are my protection, just like God.  You protect me even if it is from myself.  You are my shelter, just like God, and I can ‘run’ to you when I need to.  You are my inspiration, you inspire me, just like God. You are everything I need and you do everything for me to help me, take care of me, bring me joy, be there for me.  Just like God.”

I was speechless. I was so amazed he felt that way. Kinda gave me the shivers inside!

It is always something special to discover things about this man that I didn’t know. And to rejoice that those “things” don’t indicate he’s a hidden axe murderer deep inside. I guess if he was, I’d still love him, ’cause he sure loves me. I’d hide his axe, though.

It is such a wonder to realize that the more I know him, the more I learn about him. When we are 120 years old, I bet I’ll still be looking at him saying, “I didn’t know that about you! I am such a blessed woman.”

I think if more women would be “like God” with their men, the world would certainly be a better place.

And lest you think this is a little one-sided, the Bible says a man is “to die” or “give his life” for his wife, as Jesus died for us. Yikes!

I’d rather be the shelter!

**********
You placed gold on my finger
You brought love like I’ve never known
You gave life to our children
And to me a reason to go on.

You’re my bread when I’m hungry
You’re my shelter from troubled winds
You’re my anchor in life’s ocean
But most of all you’re my best friend.

When I need hope and inspiration
You’re always strong when I’m tired and weak
I could search this whole world over
You’ll still be everything that I need.

You’re my bread when I’m hungry
You’re my shelter from troubled winds
You’re my anchor in life’s ocean
But most of all you’re my best friend.
(repeat)

Nan, happy anniversary to you and Alpha hubby! Wow! I think your man just paid you the best compliment ever! Some day you’re going to have to share your secret for keeping this man so in love with you, lady! I know I’ve told you before that I’m quite the cynic, I mean realist, when it comes to romantic love. However, I will admit that whenever I read one of your post, I have doubts. Does real love like this exist? And if so, why haven’t I made its acquaintance? Can someone really care about you this way? These are the questions I’m left asking myself. Why? Because your relationship makes me wonder if I’m wrong. And that’s a good thing cause I’d love it if I were wrong! I mean, who doesn’t want to feel cherished like this! May you continue to celebrate anniversary years with your soul mate, friend! :)

Bella, would it help you to know that I had all those very same thoughts? That there were not good men and there was no such thing as true love? I did all the way up until I met Alpha Hubby. I am in constant awe at the strength of his love for me. He says, “It’s all about covenant.” He made one before God and he won’t break it. Wow.

Annalyse Says:

Another fine shiver-worthy post from you. You guys! Are you really like this in real life? I mean I can’t imagine being married to a guy like that. It must be wonderful.

LBDDiaries Reply:

Yes, we are like this and it is wonderful. He is human, has foibles but it is because of him we have what we have. He is a master at unconditional love.

Mary Says:

OK. I’m cryin’ just a little. And I have a lump in my throat. I’ve never heard this song before, but I’m sure glad that I have now. How awesome is it to be able to spend your life with someone who loves you that much? I know that I still haven’t figured out what good thing I ever did in this life to be so blessed. I’m beginning to wonder if our boys are related somehow… LOL

You’re the best, Nan. Thank you for sharing such a lovely, sweet moment with us. ~ Mary

Alpha Hubby is everything supportive and hysterical fun, to boot! Every now and again I ask him why he loves me so much. He says “Do I not tell you enough? Is that why you keep asking?” No. It is just hard to believe sometimes! When I think of my past – and how I ended up with him – I am always thankful and grateful.

Nancy Says:

Happy Anniversary, you crazy kids! :) My husband is also my very best friend…..but sometimes he does say…..”you’re wearing that?” I’m not sure what he means :))))

Yep, I’ve heard that little line, too, more dealing with a couple of terribly ratty shirts I wear to clean house and forget to change out of. Comfort doesn’t not always look good (ho).

Suzanne Says:

This is such a sweet post. I am so glad that I read it. You are very blessed!

Could you please share with me the verse reference for the husband giving his life for his wife?

I want to be a better wife to my husband…I think that we both need a fair amount of work at this point to be what the other needs. That is my frequent prayer: first to be who Heavenly Father wills me to be and second to be the wife that my husband needs me to be.

Thank you.

I am very, very blessed. The verse is in Ephesians 5. Thank you for stopping by.

I know when I stop by your place, you are going to make me smile!!! I think you’ve got an Alpha Male with a Word of Affirmation Love Language! I didn’t realize God made those! LOL You could have really gone places with the “You are like God” comparison – but you kept it sweetly beautiful instead! Happy Anniversary!!!!! Love just gets more amazing doesn’t it – as it ages!

Alpha Hubby is a total build-up type man – he always builds me up, makes sure I know he appreciates me, and it such an amazing support – along with being a great chaser. Oh you know – chase me around the house!

High Heeled Life Says:

What a blessing to have a wonderful man to walk beside on this journey of earthly life. Some times I think women (some…not all) become so competitive to be equal to a man that they forget to actually be women and how to treat a lovely, thoughtful and caring man! Great post my friend!! xo HHL

Oh I so agree with you. I think we should have a “Learn to be a Lady Again” revolution. Too many don’t realize you can be equal and still feminine.

Huggsssss back, my friend. You are always so uplifting.

Alpha Says:

There are so many things you have done for me that there is not enough room here to tell it all. You taught me how to dress, how to do my hair, to speak proper english, how to interact with others. With just these few I have been able to transistion from basically labor status to supervisory and to president of our company. That encompasses alot. Thanks Baybay

LBDDiaries Reply:

Oh, I don’t know – you were looking pretty sharp when I met you but that “interact with others” thing probably saved your life, you old meanie you. Remember those electricians? I think you would have been great no matter what.

Tracy Wilson Says:

I love you, Nan.
Really, really love you.

And he’s right…because shouldn’t the world “below” strive to be a reflection of the world “above”?
He’s a pretty smart fella:)

True, true. I just have to say I’d never thought of myself “like God” in that way before. It was pretty cool and a cool way to look at it – as a protector, inspiration, safe harbor…

Karen@WaistingTime Says:

You are so lucky, both of you, to have each other:)

This one just blows me totally away Nan. Where did you find this guy? Does he have available brothers? Do you have any idea how lucky. No scratch that, how blessed you are? I didn’t believe there were guys out there like him anymore.

LBDDiaries Reply:

Sorry, nope. He was the baby and the others are older and taken. Oh yeah, I sure know how blessed I am. It’s just wrapping my mind around the fact he loves me this much… that’s hard!
